Primary thymus tumors: retrospective case analysis at a reference center in Latin America, 2011–2019

Abstract Background Thymic tumors are unusual neoplasms, representing 0.2 to 1.5% of in humans, but correspond 20% mediastinal and 50% those that occur the anterior mediastinum. They tend appear around fourth fifth decades life without gender predilection. Up 30% patients asymptomatic, therefore many incidentally diagnosed. Radical thymectomy is treatment choice with high survival rates when detected early stages. Methods This was a retrospective descriptive study, including 18 adult patients’ diagnosis thymic neoplasm, who were managed surgical resection from 2011 2019. Information about demographics, clinical characteristics, imaging findings, medical management, plus histological findings obtained reported. Results included, which specific histologic studies reveled thymomas, carcinomas, neuroendocrine tumors, thymolipoma cyst. Mean age 52.7 years, predominance male population. The main symptom dyspnea, followed by cough chest pain. Paraneoplastic syndromes such as myasthenia gravis, aplastic anemia Cushing syndrome 89% cases treated radical alone, while only 2 required chemotherapy radiotherapy. There no complications. hospital stay length 11. 9 days, 1 mortality during admission. 5-year rate 81%. Conclusions thymectomy, has been shown positively impact patient mortality. Early detection key improve outcomes.
